The Shared Memory of the Bosphorus
Meramet is a research-oriented, ethnographic multimedia art project that connects the two shores of the Bosphorus through the exploration of its layered memory, stories, and traces.
The word meramet refers to a makeshift and temporary method of repair, something that allows an object to endure a little longer, to remain usable despite its damage. In maritime and fishing traditions, it describes the act of mending torn fishing nets using a wooden or plastic tool called a “needle,” resembling the original technique used to weave the nets.
For us, Meramet is a conceptual fabric. Stitched from diverse methods, voices, and memories, it forms the groundwork of an art and research project that traces what binds us across water, time, and story.
